We will spend the autumn term exploring some foreign poetry in translation. Texts selected by the group will include Jacques Prevert, lyrics by Jacques Brel, then we may look at some poems by Heinrich Heine, Wolfgang von Goethe and Federico GarcĂa Lorca. We might try Russian poets like Boris Pasternak and Anna Akhmatova.
In the spring we will turn back to some notable English poets writing in the 18th century, such as Thomas Grey, James Thompson and Alexander Pope.
This group simply discusses a Handout of poems chosen by the Group Leader with help from the members. We like to get a sense of a particular poet rather than look at poems by different writers suggested by a theme. No previous knowledge or experience of reading poetry is necessary and electronic copies of all the poems to be discussed will be distributed before each of the meetings.
