Now in its third year, the aim of the group is to enable participants to make effective use of an Ordnance Survey map and compass to plan and lead walks. It is designed especially for those already in walking groups who lack the confidence and/or knowledge to contribute to leading walks, and is suitable for both beginners and those who wish to improve existing skills.
The course consists of five full-day sessions, combining indoor discussion, demonstration and exercises with short walks of c. 1–3 miles that put skills into practice. Participants will be limited to a maximum of 10 and should expect to commit to the full course.
The 2026 group is full, but the joint leaders, Tania Dickinson and Ann Simpson, maintain a waiting list in case there are any withdrawals and invite you to register your interest for this year or, potentially, the future.
