Dr Peter Morrall, BA (Hons), PGCE, MSc, PhD. Former Associate Professor in
Sociology and Health, University of Leeds, Lifelong Learning Tutor, University of
York, and mental health professional.
This four-week course (two hours per week) can be undertaken as a whole.
Alternatively, one or more of the weeks can be selected. The delivery style will vary
depending on the requirements of the participants but will be based on input from the
course leader and discussions.
The subjects covered will be:
Week 1 - Mental Health: what is it, what is it not, and what should be done about it?
Week 2 - Mental-Healthism: is there really a ‘mental health crisis’?
Week 3 - Psychotherapy: the good, the bad, and the grubby
Week 4 - Insane Asylums and Insane Psychiatrists: a history of the medicalisation of
madness.
